DESCRIPTION

SEQUOIA will develop the highest resolution OCT system ever built, protected from noise by artificial intelligence (AI)-based OAM control and validated in a real-world application: retinal imaging.

Impact

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a key imaging technology, especially for ophthalmology, that enables high-resolution, non-contact 3D imaging and has helped save the eyesight of millions of people around the world. OCT has developed rapidly since its invention in 1991, but has stagnated since reaching the practical limit of axial resolution (dz) of ~1 µm (>5 µm for most commercial systems). Quantum OCT (QOCT) offers a ×2 step change improvement in dz along with greatly reduced dispersion. In addition, by controlling the orbital angular momentum (OAM), it is possible to protect the system from ambient noise and provide better edge definition, surface profile distinction and chiral object discrimination. In SEQUOIA, the highest resolution OCT system ever built, protected from noise by artificial intelligence (AI)-based OAM control, will be developed and validated in a real-world application: retinal imaging.
