Collaborative mobile robotics of deformable objects in industrial applications
European Commission - Interreg Sudoe
There are many strategic industries that handle deformable products, such as food, clothing, toys or leather goods. Automating the handling and processing of deformable products is a major technological challenge and, due to the variability of these products, these tasks are difficult to automate today, as no robust robotic solution is offered to the industry. Many tasks involving deformable products are performed manually (e.g., assembling the leather parts on the sole of a shoe). In many cases, these tasks can cause ailments or injuries (e.g., repetitive or non-ergonomic movements of the joints or handling of very heavy objects), uncomfortable (e.g., cutting meat in refrigerated environments and under unpleasant odors) and even dangerous for human operators (e.g., handling knives, hot parts or toxic products such as glues or paints). The main objective of this project is to improve the competitiveness and working conditions of industries where deformable objects must be handled directly by human operators to control their shape during production.
